Governor Announces Public Health Emergency to Address Opioid Addiction Epidemic

On March 27th, Governor Patrick declared a public health emergency in Massachusetts in response to the growing opioid addiction epidemic. To try and combat this worsening problem, the Governor dedicated $20 million to enhance substance abuse treatment programs.

As Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health & Substance Abuse and member of the Special Senate Committee on Drug Abuse & Treatment Options, I see how addiction has adversely affected the lives of far too many residents here in the Commonwealth. It's important that additional resources be designated for treatment and recovery services, and it's very encouraging to see a stronger sense of urgency to help people and families struggling with addiction.

Tri-Town Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition

On March 3rd, I had the opportunity to participate in a Tri-Town Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition meeting that also featured members of the DanversCares Coalition. I learned more about both groups and how they work to support healthy decision-making in our communities. After listening to the coalitions, I shared information about my work on the Mental Health & Substance Abuse Committee. It's great to see that concerned citizens and local officials are committed to working on the critically important issues of addiction and substance abuse.

White Ribbon Day

I attended the 7th Annual Massachusetts White Ribbon Day event at the State House with Mayor Kim Driscoll. This campaign encourages young men to actively promote respect and equality with the hope of ending sexual and domestic violence in our communities.
An Act Relative to Unlawful Sexual Surveillance

After a recent ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the Legislature acted quickly to pass "An Act Relative to Unlawful Sexual Surveilance“, which makes "upskirt" photos illegal. Governor Patrick signed this bill into law on March 7th.

While it was extremely upsetting and disappointing to learn that the existing law did not fully protect a woman’s privacy, I’m very pleased that the Legislature corrected this issue swiftly and unanimously. Strengthening and updating this law was necessary because we, as legislators, should do everything we can to completely protect a woman’s right to privacy.
Transportation Bond Bill

This past month, the Senate approved $13 billion in capital spending over the next five years to fund improvements to the Commonwealth’s transportation system. Several transportation projects from the Second Essex District are due to receive funding through the Senate bill:
  •  A study to review traffic intersections near the North Beverly train station, including Route 1A, and recommend improvements to address traffic issues
  •  For completion of the resurfacing of Route 97 in Topsfield
  •  For improvements to the Route 107/Highland Avenue Corridor in Salem.
The bill now goes to a committee of conference to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill.
North Shore Superintendents' Roundtable

On March 21st, I traveled to Topsfield for a North Shore Superintendents' roundtable discussion. The roundtable gave local superintendents the opportunity to share their ideas and priorities with their state representatives. Thank you to all the superintendents who spoke about the work being done in their respective schools and for suggesting ways to improve the quality of public education in the Commonwealth.
Danvers Food Pantry

On St. Patrick's Day, I spent the morning at the Danvers Food Pantry. I enjoyed meeting the team of volunteers and learning about all the great work they do to help families in need, particularly those who are living temporarily in local motels.
Beverly Meals on Wheels

In March, the Meals on Wheels Association of America conducts a March for Meals campaign. According to Meals on Wheels, the campaign presents an opportunity for all of us to support our senior neighbors through a variety of efforts that make our communities stronger and our neighbors healthier. This year I helped deliver meals to local seniors with the Beverly Council on AgingThank you to everyone who helped organize this event and brought this great campaign to the North Shore!
Danvers Rally for Meghan Duggan

After attending the dedication of the newly renovated Danvers High, I joined Rep. Ted Speliotis at a town-wide rally for Meghan Duggan, Captain of the 2014 USA Women's Ice Hockey team. Rep. Speliotis and I presented Meghan with a joint resolution from the House and Senate to recognize Meghan's outstanding athletic acheivements.

Congratulations, Meghan! Your team made the country, the Commomwealth, and the Town of Danvers very proud.
